Where will your home gym be placed?

There is no right answer to where your gym should be located in your home.

While some homeowners have the means or opportunity to build a home addition for their gym, most will use an existing space to their advantage.

Spaces include:

Basements: One of the most popular places to build a home gym is in a basement, given their cool temperature and the fact that they are often unused. Most basements have stable floors and do not have rooms beneath them (reducing potential noise concerns).

Attic: While not always possible if the dimensions aren’t right or if they’re placed over key bedrooms, attics offer lots of unused space and opportunities for natural light.

Features and a layout all your own

While many homeowners immediately jump to what equipment should be included, we encourage you to put just as much thought into the features and layout of your gym.

Windows: While some home gyms are completed in windowless rooms, we think that natural light and a view of the outside world can inspire you during your workout.
Walls: We recommend painting your walls a bright color. In addition, many with home gyms utilize large wall mirrors to help with their workouts and create the illusion of additional space.
Lighting: Often not considered, we recommend investing in good quality, soft lighting for your home gym. Just because most gyms utilize harsh lighting does not mean you need to!

Gym equipment

When deciding on the equipment for your home gym, try to find a balance between simple equipment, which will lay a foundation for working out frequently, and higher-end equipment.

Here’s some equipment that no gym should be without:

One of the best ways to do this is by turning an extra room you have — be it an extra bedroom, a finished basement, or anywhere else in your home — into a specialized room. Keep reading to learn about 8 unconventional rooms that can transform your home.

1. TV room

Is there anything better than curling up with the family to watch the latest episode of a TV show the whole squad loves, or making some popcorn and watching a new movie on a Friday night?

While most people think of libraries as a place for holding books, they should also be a good place to relax with a cup of coffee and read, or to get some work done or conduct research.

Always a popular option for families, game and billiards rooms can become the recreational beating heart of your home. Most billiards rooms feature large items like a pool or ping pong table, but many also include smaller tables with board games or chess.

We’ve found that many families also choose to place items like a TV, wet bar, and other comforts that make it a place of leisure and relaxation without having to leave the room. This is a great option for a finished basement, where space is plentiful and natural light is not as important.

4. Home bar

This is one for the couples who love to entertain out there! Home bars are becoming more and more popular on the North Shore, and we’re not surprised given how much fun they can add to a home!

While all home bars are different, most feature a built-in bar with stools, a refrigerator, a sink, and shelving at the very least. Some fun additional features include a kegerator with a tap, televisions to watch the big game, and neon signs. Home bars are often combined with billiards rooms to make the ultimate in-home relaxation, but they are great all on their own as well!

Hobbies are a great way to take the pressure off of everyday life and get lost in something you love. One of our most requested bonus rooms, home gyms are a great investment. Not only do they encourage a physically healthy lifestyle, but they can also help cut out the expenses of monthly gym memberships, and will cut down on the amount of time you commute to the gym.

Every home gym will be different, but a durable floor made for home gyms, such as rubber flooring, is a great place to start. When possible, housing your home gym in a room with windows and plenty of space to not feel cramped is beneficial. As far as equipment, start by keeping tabs on the equipment you most use at your gym now. This will create a good base of equipment that you can then build on as your home gym develops.

Additionally, keep in mind that you can center the room around other workouts you love. We’ve seen many homeowners build yoga-specific studios in their homes or build a space that is perfect for barre!

7. Music studio

While a niche room for musically inclined families, a music studio is the perfect place for music lovers of any ability to practice and record music, even if it is just for fun.

Most home music studios feature soundproofing, microphones for recording, monitors for playback, and well-thought-out acoustics. They might also include stationery instruments such as drums and a piano, or advanced recording equipment such as a computer with a DAW or other music production software . For many homeowners, the onset of Spring means one thing: cleaning and organization. As temperatures rise and the snow melts, it’s a great time to tackle many home projects or consider a renovation that you may have been putting off all Winter long.

This month, we’ll highlight some great ways to incorporate organization into a home renovation project, as well as ways to tackle your Spring to-do list, including deep cleaning, decluttering, and optimizing space within your home. The best part is most of these can even be done year-round.

Ways to add organization during a home renovation

When considering updating your home, make sure to keep in mind ways to improve the layout and function of your home. Keeping organization in mind as you design will keep clutter and mess at bay and make living in your home more enjoyable.

Where does your family typically enter the house? Through the garage into the basement? At the front door? Since this will be where shoes and backpacks are immediately discarded, make sure to have a dedicated and organized space for every item. This will help your family put things away when they arrive, and quickly find what they need when it’s time to leave. Built-in benches and cubbies are great and can include a dedicated section for each family member. Make sure your landing area or mudroom includes specific and easy to access spots for coats, purses and backpacks, sports equipment, shoes, and cold weather gear.

With the rise of the Marie Condos and Home Edits of the world, the amount of kitchen customizations that keep your kitchen simple and organized is endless. Homeowners need to be aware of all available options when designing and building a new kitchen that can help keep your food, prep, and kitchen items perfectly organized.

Some of our favorite kitchen customizations include:

Toe kick drawers or double height cabinets. Both are a great way to take advantage of every inch of space, particularly in smaller kitchens.

Specific built-In storage: Have a large collection of cookbooks? Consider adding a bookshelf to the end of the island or a row of cabinets. Carve out a space for a dedicated pull-out cabinet for trash and recycling which will eliminate the need for a stand-alone trash or recycling bin. Add slotted dividers in a cabinet to keep cookie sheets and trays organized.

There are also almost infinite types of aftermarket items, many available at Target or Amazon, that can up your organization game in the kitchen or panty. These are particularly helpful for dry goods items which are difficult to see and organize. Tiered pantry inserts or expandable drawer inserts for spices are a great way to make it easier to find spices on the fly. Round turntables for oils and vinegars or even canned goods make it easy to spot every item in your cabinet or pantry.

In an ideal world, a dedicated laundry room would be located near the main bedrooms in the house. However, here in New England we know the most likely spot for laundry is usually in the basement. If during a home renovation you don’t have the space or budget to move your laundry closer to the bedrooms, consider some other options to up your laundry game.

Spring cleaning and organization

Make a list, but don’t get overwhelmed

When it comes to staying on top of a home cleaning and organization schedule, lists are key. Keep a running list of all cleaning, maintenance, and organizational tasks that need to be done routinely in your home. Not sure where to start? One way to not feel overwhelmed is to keep separate lists based on areas of the house, seasons, or the time needed for particular tasks. For example, keep a list of projects that can typically be completed in about an hour, another for those taking a few hours to complete, and finally those full day or full weekend behemoths.

You could also have seasonal or indoor/outdoor lists, since some projects may be dependent on good weather. You can create these lists in a Google Doc so they can be shared with or updated by anyone in the family or household.

Declutter – room by room

The long winter months and the gift-giving season can mean one thing: an influx of STUFF! Spring is a great time to declutter. While this can seem overwhelming at first, we have a few easy tips that should make purging and reorganizing a breeze.

Go room by room: Tackling the whole house or even one floor can be overwhelming and time consuming! Pick somewhere small and start there.
Remove everything other than large furniture pieces: Yes, everything! Once you’ve removed all decor and smaller items, it will be easier to decide which things you truly want back in the space
Dust, vacuum, and wipe down all surfaces: Vacuum under rugs and large furniture pieces like couches and tables. Don’t forget to dust baseboards and wash windows, straighten frames, wipe down mirrors, etc. Vacuum out fireplaces and under couch cushions.
Replace or repair any broken items: Think lightbulbs or mismatched coasters.
Decide what goes and what stays: Make 3 piles: Trash, donate, and relocate.
Only put back what’s worth keeping: Place other items in the trash or donation box, or in a separate bin to relocate to another area of the house.

Parting with your stuff: 3 easy ways

Luckily social media and technology have made it easier to sell, give away, or donate anything you no longer use or need. Here are some great resources to help make your purge easier!

Facebook Marketplace: Have something in great shape and hoping to make a little money? Facebook Marketplace is an easy and free way to sell clothing, furniture, or home items. Want to learn more? Check out this Facebook link.
Buy Nothing: The Buy Nothing Project is an easy way to have a positive impact. Giving away your unwanted items not only reduces trash and waste, it also fosters a sense of community, as you’re often able to meet new people. The project is typically organized through local Facebook. Search and join your local town or community’s page on Facebook, and be sure to read over the rules of your group, as they may vary from town to town.
Donate: Don’t have the time or energy to sell or give away things you don’t need through online outlets? Prefer to give your items away to your favorite charity or to those in need? Search here to find organizations in your area and what type of donations they allow. The best part? Many pick up your items at your home for free!
Stay Safe! Many local police stations are “Safe Trade” locations. If you’d prefer not to meet up at your home for a purchase or donation pickup, you can suggest meeting up at your local police station. Here is a great resource on staying safe when you buy, sell, or pick up an item from someone you don’t know.

You can do it – tackle the kitchen!

The kitchen can often be the most overwhelming room to clean, declutter, and organize. However, it is probably where you and your family spend the largest amount of time. Sprucing it up can make living, working, or cooking in the space easier and more enjoyable.

Before you start organizing food items, bakeware, glassware, etc., remove everything from each cabinet, one by one. Discard any opened and expired items. Instead of throwing away any chipped plates or glasses, try upcycling them! For larger items that are only used once or twice per year, it may make more sense to store them in a closet or boxed up (and clearly labeled!) in the basement.

Consider changing where your glasses and plates are stored. Keep glasses close to the fridge and consider moving plates and bowls to a large pull-out drawer so kids can easily access them.

Garage cleanout

With four distinct seasons here in New England, keeping everything from bicycles, to lawn tools to snowblowers in the garage year round simply may not be possible. Therefore, it’s extra important to declutter and reorganize the garage several times per year, perhaps at least once in Spring and again in the Fall.

If you have many items to discard, consider a junk haul service or “dumpster bag” from your local hardware store, who will then haul it away when it’s full. Make sure you are optimizing your precious garage space too. You can add a pegboard system to the wall or purchase garage shelving. These items will keep everything off the floor, where they are susceptible to water (or animals!) and also increase storage — is there ever enough?

Consider swapping out items by season. For example, if you have a bulkhead and easy access to your unfinished basement, keep items like bicycles and golf clubs there in winter, and shovels and sleds there in summer. Have a snowblower or lawn mower? Some repair companies will pick up and store for the off season if you regularly service with them.

Even the tidiest of homes will always need some cleaning. Don’t get overwhelmed, start small and have a plan! Before you know it you’ll have a mess-free, organized home that is easy to clean and maintain.

This is a great option as it is a simple remodel and does not disturb the overall flow of your kitchen. Without extensive work, you’ll have a quartered-off section for quiet, privacy, and freedom from distractions.

The nook can then have built-in desks or cabinets (more on these below) or you can decorate it with your own selection of office furniture. Whatever fuels your creativity and passion!

Built-in desks and cabinets

While not as quartered-off, built-in desks and cabinets provide a great option for adding a work area to your kitchen without disrupting the flow and layout. Even small spaces can have a big impact! Built-ins take up less space than stand-alone desks and office furniture, and fit aesthetically with the rest of your kitchen.

Stand-alone room off the kitchen

As the most advanced of our options, a stand-alone room is an exciting possibility for those who have the usable space, whether it’s repurposing and remodeling an existing room or adding a new room onto your kitchen area.

While your children are loudly playing video games, you can be in your living room reading without interruption. Similarly, you can be watching the big game on Sunday (Go Pats!) while your teenager does homework in your kitchen.

We’ve been saying for years — TV rooms are the best way to keep a family at peace.

A living room is not an entertainment room

One of the primary reasons many families don’t invest the space in a tv room is because they just make do with their living room.

We understand this! Particularly in many of the smaller homes in Beverly and the North Shore, there is only so much space in a home! Why not combine your living room and tv room into 1 space?

In reality, these rooms are designed for different purposes:

Living room: A quiet space for your family to relax. Often combined with a kitchen in an open concept design, these spaces are great for reading and conversing with company or family members.
Entertainment room: A place for activity. Here, you can enjoy a movie, play games, and make more of a ruckus without worrying about disrupting others in your home.

Because of this, adding a tv room will actually provide you with 2 new rooms, as you’ll get your living room back to what it was designed to do.

Where will it go?

Another big reason many homeowners don’t opt for an entertainment room is that they just don’t have the space.

For those that have the resources, home additions are a great option for north shore homeowners. This will allow for a design that will fit perfectly with your needs. Another great option for those without space is a basement remodel.

Both of these options are great, as they can be built away from major traffic areas of your home, allowing for a more isolated experience.

Different elements of a TV room

Every homeowner has different needs. Some families love movies and watching TV, while others may be more focused on sports. Some may love playing pool, while others may love board games.

While designs will vary based on your priorities, most entertainment rooms are centered around some fundamental elements.

Entertainment fit for you

The first step to an unbelievable entertainment room is to make sure it’s centered around what you and your family love. The traditional view is that TV rooms need a massive screen tv and a pool table, but this may not align with your priorities.

Before diving into an entertainment room, speak with the whole family to see what they want out of the space. While it’s not always good to ask your children their opinion on such a massive investment, realistically they’ll be the ones who enjoy it the most. It should in large part be designed around what they like to do and what will keep them busy.

Space to enjoy

You’ll want to make sure there’s plenty of spaces for you to actually enjoy your investment.

One common issue we’ve seen before is a room centered around a pool table that doesn’t have enough room to actually play pool. We’ve also seen home theatres with beautiful screens and seating that don’t have enough space for an optimal viewing experience. If you have children, you’re also going to need enough space for them to be running around playing and enjoying themselves.

Empty space is just as valuable as furnished space, so planning for actual use of your entertainment, not just placement, is crucial.

BIG Screens

While not every entertainment room needs to be completely centered around the television, we haven’t found many entertainment rooms we love without a TV. We recommend having a sitting area where you and your family can have a movie night, watch sports, or view your favorite shows.

For cinephiles, this could mean a big projection screen where you can watch the latest Marvel movies or Oscar favorites. For a room less focused on viewing movies or sports, you can put a smaller, high-quality TV around a sofa.

Refreshments to please

One of the most requested features we get when building out TV rooms are bar areas where homeowners can store drinks, prepare snacks, and sit and chat.

These areas can be as large or small as you’d like, but generally involve:

Bar seating
Refrigerator with icemaker
Dishwasher
Sink
Microwave
Oven

Bars are also a great way to make your home entertainment ready! Your entertainment room will be a great place to watch the Pats in the Super Bowl or host your partner’s surprise birthday party.

Open floor plans

One of the most important parts of any farmhouse style kitchen is space. In a kitchen, the best way to create space is through an open floor plan.

Generally, open floor plan kitchen remodels integrate space from another room or an addition to provide the needed square feet. This extra space is used to not only make way for other appliances and features like kitchen islands, but also to provide natural light and allow the room to breathe.

For this reason, open concept kitchens are also the perfect companion for families who love to entertain and see the kitchen as the beating heart of their home.

Farmhouse sinks

Back in the day, large sinks were common in kitchens for one reason — their versatility! Whether it was to prepare fresh food, wash clothes, or really any other use you can imagine, large sinks were needed for day-to-day life.

Today, farmhouse sinks are a lot more practical for modern lifestyles. They are also more attractive due to the stunning materials used by many sink manufacturers. What hasn’t changed is their versatility. Ask any homeowner with a large farmhouse sink and they’ll all say the same thing — “now that we have one, we couldn’t live without it!”

Wood (reclaimed if possible)

Natural materials are one of the core tenants of farmhouse kitchens. The most important material of all when considering your farmhouse kitchen’s design is likely the one you’re most familiar with — good old fashioned wood!

Wood is used in many places in farmhouse kitchens, some you might already be using and others that might be a bit more eccentric. While you’re likely used to wood cabinets and floors, some fun ways that homeowners use wood include exposed beams, wood countertops, and as brace supports in a kitchen island.

While not always possible due to sourcing or cost considerations, one fun way to incorporate wood into your farmhouse kitchen is with reclaimed wood. This ups the “rustic” level of the kitchen and adds to the unique character of your kitchen and home.

Metal light fixtures and accents

Along the same lines as wood, using metal materials will provide a rustic and unique element to your kitchen.

One of our favorite raw metal design elements is a classic copper light fixture. This adds a splash of grandeur while still keeping things rooted and down to earth. Copper, and other metal fixtures, also add an unmatched level of aesthetic depth when mixed with reclaimed wood and the natural light provided by your open concept kitchen.

Creative cabinetry

Cabinets are generally top-of-mind when it comes to kitchen remodels. This is no different when it comes to farmhouse kitchens.

Cabinets in farmhouse kitchens can go a couple different directions depending on your aesthetic preferences. Some common options include either white, navy blue, or wood-treated cabinets. If you want to add a bit of character, glass front cabinets are rising in popularity. Another popular option for those of us who love our dishware are open cabinets or shelves, which integrate the utilitarian design concepts that are so common in farmhouse kitchens.

Long tables and a plethora of seating

If farmhouse kitchens are all about getting everybody together to enjoy each other’s company, make sure you have somewhere for everyone to sit when they get there.

We always recommend that homeowners invest in a long, large wooden table to offer seating and add to the aesthetics of their farmhouse kitchen. Simple, elegant tables can be dressed up or down depending on the event, and are very utilitarian in that they can fit lots of people for events like Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner.

Additionally, adding bar seating is great when entertaining, but also for your family’s daily use throughout the day when they don’t want to set a table or someone just wants to eat by themselves.

Keeping it modern

Just because you are designing your kitchen in reference to the olden days, it doesn’t mean you need to skimp on the modern kitchen features that we all know and love.

Modern appliances are made to fit in with the farmhouse kitchens trend. And appliance drawers in your kitchens allow you to still have modern conveniences like microwaves and toaster ovens. How do I choose Products and Finishes?

In case you haven’t noticed, there is no shortage of home design and decor products — in stores and online. Need a little help picking out products and finishes? Our in-house architectural designer can help you with every design decision throughout the process. This includes meeting on-site at tile shops, countertop showrooms, plumbing supply stores, etc., and providing insight into which products would work best in your space and with your budget.

Have an eye for design? We welcome your vision and you always have the final say when picking out products, fits, and finishes! We are simply there to help you understand how your products may work (or not!) in the space and help you keep your product selections within your budget.

Managing Construction & Completion

One of the most stressful parts of any home renovation is keeping it on time and ensuring disruptions are minimal for you, the homeowner. At the start of construction, we will outline the entire schedule, as well as our protection and cleanup plan, and provide a central point of contact for the entire process. This project manager will keep you up to date on who will be in your home and what work will be done on any given day and manage all communication with our select group of Trade Partners. Every step is scheduled in advance and keeps our team working efficiently so that the job progresses with minimal delays or disruptions.

As construction is completed, we will continue to communicate with you regularly about any outstanding issues in order to ensure the final product is completely ready for you and your family to enjoy. Upon completion, we will check in regularly during the first year post construction, and are available to answer any questions that may arise during the warranty period.
